Demetrio Bautista Lazo. Master Natural Dyer and Weaver

Demetrio Bautista is a master tapestry weaver and natural dyer from the Mexican village of Teotitlan del Village in the state of Oaxaca. He is tri-lingual, travels internationally to show his weavings and is highly regarded in the world of natural dyers. Weaving has been a trade in Teotitlan for centuries. In this interview he talks about spearheading the revival of natural dyes, how he destroyed 15 skeins of wool when he tried to dye his first batch of cochineal, learning to weave as a boy from his father and uncles, how he gets almost all of his materials from within his region and how good his wife’s enchiladas are.
